Black

Genetic Code: BB (Black)
*Actual Genotype dependent on actual birds used

True deep black Silkies can be hard to find as they are usually coming out of Blue/Black/Splash pens or project/fun color pens. This means these birds may express as black but could potentially be split to a different color. When a bird split to a different color than it expresses is bred, there could be surprises that pop up! Thus, many breeders are beginning to focus solely on solid Black Silkie Color pens that breed true, deep, black Silkies.

Black is a dominant gene. Therefore a bird only needs one copy of black to express black even though it may carry a gene for a different color. It is important to test breed your birds in order to discover their true genetic makeup when embarking on projects!

Black Silkies can be bred back to Black or put into a BBS (Blue/Black/Splash) pen. Black can also be bred to White to create Paint. Black can be a very useful color to have around!
